You can hike independently if you feel comfortable navigating Vidigal. However, guided tours handle the transport logistics and ensure safety. A guide is strictly required if you plan to hike at night or before sunrise.
Most tours include an accredited guide and the R$10 trail entry fee. Some also cover the R$10-15 mototaxi ride from the base of Vidigal to the trailhead. Hotel transfers are only included in select packages.
Read traveler warnings carefully before booking. Some budget or sunrise tours have a history of last-minute cancellations or guide no-shows. Booking a highly rated tour is recommended.

Great experience done by Henry and his crew! Excellence communication and super helpful with organization. He sent us a list of everything we need for the hike, including providing headlamps for the sunrise hike which was a life saver! Highly recommend and he hires locals for this work. Our guide Ricardo was amazing and super versed regarding the favela and its history.
This was by far my favorite activity in Rio. Ricardo was the absolute BEST! He was so knowledgeable about the area, pointed out all the wildlife, and was just fun to hike with in general.
I had an amazing moment with Jessie during the hike. It sure was hard one, probably one of the hardest I experienced lol, but definitely worth it ! The view at the end was mesmerizing and it’s among the things I prefered in Brazil
